East has a strong first half which helps in win over Jordan

SALT LAKE CITY — Friday night matched up of two of the top five teams in the state. East High traveled to Jordan High to take on the Beatdiggers. Jordan was trying to bounce back after last week's loss vs Cathedral Catholic from California where on the other side of the field East is coming off a win agaisnt East Kahuku, whose from Hawaii which made East 2-0 on the season.

The first drives of the game for both teams ended on a three and out, which had the making for a great defensive match up. The next drive after those three and out we seen East come at Jordan with their running attack where they scored the first points of the game off an 92 yard touchdown run by Ula Tolutau to give East the 7-0 lead early in the first.

Jordan tried to come back and tie up the game but the drive was soon ended by East defense where they intercepted the pass which lead to a East Field goal.

Jordan's quarterback Austin Kafentzis shook off that interception on the very next play where he ran the ball 51 yards to get Jordan on the board and close the gap to three, trialing 10-7. After the touchdown by Jordan, East fumbled the kickoff and Jordan recovered the ball, and it only two Austin Kafentzis two plays to help Jordan take the lead where he ran in a 16 yard carry for the 14-10 lead.

As quickly as Jordan scored East had answer where they got down to field quick and scored on Ula Tolutau second touchdown of the game and instantly took back the lead, 17-14. Jordan still had fight left and ran the kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown and gave Jordan the lead back 21-17 which ended a very high scoring 1st quarter.

East started the second quarter strong and came out of the gate with a Preston Curtis 75 yard touchdown to give East the lead 24-20 lead. East knew they needed a spark from their defense and they got it. Austin Kafentzis fumbled the ball and was picked up by East's Matt Webb who took it the house and opened the lead for East 31-20.

After the fumble by Jordan, East took over the game and never looked back, scoring 35 points in the second quarter and it helped them finish off Jordan and helped East Extend their record 3-0 on the season. Ula Tolutau scored one more touchdown in the game to give him three Touchdowns on the night to help bring home the win 59- 36 East.

"We're in a tough Region, now the real struggle begins Region 6 is as good as it get we got to be ready for next week," said East head coach Brandon Matich. David Winkworth
