Cougars look to each other to get back on winning track

Posted Jan 28th - 6:44pm by Katie Nielson

PROVO — BYU basketball players looked as if they were practicing with real intent this week, almost as if their lives depended on it.

With last week’s unexpected road loss at the University of San Diego, the Cougars are going to have to hit the hardwood with the mindset that the season is on the line, and they intend to do just that — as a team.

“What I was really concerned about the most is that our guys didn’t seem to be as together as much,” said head coach Dave Rose. “I don’t mean that guys got selfish or that guys were going sideways, but it just seemed like we had a disappointing loss and what we tried to do was fix it by ourselves in our own way.”

BYU looks to regain rhythm after back-to-back losses

Posted Jan 27th - 11:34pm by Trevor Woller

With only nine games remaining in the regular schedule, and coming off a weekend loss against the University of San Diego that dropped the Cougars to 15-7 overall and 5-4 in West Coast Conference play, BYU is facing an uphill battle toward reaching the NCAA tournament. BYU head coach Dave Rose, whose team has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, understands the predicament the Cougars are in.

BYU hoopsters at the turn; WCC midseason honors

Posted Jan 26th - 2:40pm

All ten West Coast Conference teams are making the turn in their conference schedules. Each team has played every other team once, as all have played nine of their 18 league games.

At the midway point, BYU stands in a three-way tie (with Pepperdine and Santa Clara) for third place with a 5-4 conference record—the same mark the Cougars had after nine league games last season, when the WCC slate was unbalanced (BYU had not faced every conference foe during the first half of the conference slate).

Last season, BYU rebounded from a sluggish WCC front half to post an 8-1 mark in the back half and boost its at-large hopes heading into the conference tournament in Las Vegas, where the Cougars won two games and punched their NCAA tournament ticket despite a loss to Gonzaga in the conference tournament finals.

Cougars look for all-around contributions to end road swing on Saturday

Posted Jan 22nd - 11:57pm by Jaren Wood

PROVO — The BYU men's basketball team got some key contributions this past weekend in a split on its road trip, and it will look for more when it closes out its road swing against the San Diego Toreros Saturday afternoon.

On Jan. 15, the Cougars started the trip with a 93-80 win at Pacific before coming up short, 82-77, two nights later at Saint Mary’s.

Resilient Cougars return to conference road

Posted Jan 22nd - 6:31pm by Greg Wrubell

Shorthanded during last week's split decision at Pacific and St. Mary's, the BYU basketball team returns to the West Coast Conference road this weekend, visiting San Diego for a Saturday matinee.

Head coach Dave Rose said on Thursday that guard Anson Winder is ready to play again after missing both games last week with a knee sprain, but big man Nate Austin has re-injured his hamstring and will not be ready to take on the Toreros.

"Today was probably the toughest day for (Winder), just recovering from a couple of hard practices," said Rose. "I anticipate that he'll feel good...and hopefully we'll have him for the game on Saturday."

Cougars bounce back from a split week, prepare to head out on the road

Posted Jan 13th - 11:59pm by Katie Nielson

PROVO — You win some and you lose some, to sum up the BYU Cougars' past week at the Marriott Center. Starting out with a disappointing 67-61 loss to Pepperdine on Thursday night, the Cougars bounced back with an 85-72 win Saturday against Loyola Marymount. For the next two games, BYU heads out on the road to face two very different conference opponents, opening against the Pacific Tigers who have lost their last two games.

Injury-plagued Cougars head back on WCC road

Posted Jan 13th - 6:14pm by Greg Wrubell

Add Anson Winder to the list of BYU players who have spent time on this season's injured list. Winder's status for the Cougars' upcoming road swing to Pacific and St. Mary's is up in the air after a knee injury suffered during Saturday's home win over Loyola Marymount.

BYU head coach Dave Rose, asked on Tuesday if Winder would be able to play on Thursday in Stockton, said "right now, we don't know."

"It's just a matter of seeing how quickly it will heal," said Rose. "He wanted to do more (in practice) than he did today, so that was a little discouraging. Hopefully it heals quick."

Posted Jan 8th - 12:45pm by Greg Wrubell

BYU will face LSU in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff on Sept. 2, 2017 at NRG Stadium (formerly Reliant Stadium), it was announced on Thursday.

"We are thrilled to announce that LSU and BYU will be competing in the 2017 AdvoCare Texas Kickoff game at NRG Stadium to open the college football season," said Jamey Rootes, President of the Houston Texans and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment. "We look forward to hosting these two great football programs and their passionate fan bases for what has become a Labor Day weekend tradition in Houston. This game reinforces the reputation that Houston and NRG Stadium have earned as a premier destination for college football."

"We continue to be pleased with the growth of the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff," said Pete Derzis, Sr. Vice President, ESPN Events. "Both teams have a great fan following and rich history, which will continue to bring a high level of interest to our game."
