Rose ready to move forward to next opportunities

Posted Dec 16th - 11:59pm by Mitch Davis

PROVO — Coming off a week of in-state battles, BYU head basketball coach Dave Rose took time in his weekly coach’s show to talk about the positives he is seeing in his team as well as answer the big question on the minds of Cougar fans, coaches and players alike: how is Tyler Haws?

Cougars ready to go bowling in Miami

Posted Dec 16th - 3:52pm by Mitchell Marshall

PROVO — On Monday, BYU is playing in a bowl game for the 10th straight season and looking to improve its record in that streak to 7-3. The Cougars will take on the Memphis Tigers, a team ranked 5th in the nation in points allowed; opponents have averaged just 17.1 points against them this season.

The Tigers took home a share of the American Athletic Conference crown led by AAC Coach of the Year Justin Fuente and AAC Defensive Player of the Year Tank Jakes. Two of their three losses were to top 25 opponents in UCLA and Ole Miss.

Memphis runs a similar 3-4 defense to BYU, and senior running back Paul Lasike says that brings familiarity and provides confidence.

Mendenhall opens up on Big 12, coaching search

Posted Dec 12th - 4:07pm by Mitchell Marshall

PROVO — BYU hasn’t played football in nearly two weeks and has a bowl game to look forward to in 10 days, but there’s been no lack of attention for the program.

More fuel was added to the BYU fire because of the Big 12 and the College Football Playoffs; the head coaching job at Bronco Mendenhall’s alma mater Oregon State opened up; and BYU lost players and staff.

BYU's Rose: 'Our guys will be ready'

Posted Dec 9th - 6:12pm by Greg Wrubell

PROVO BYU head basketball coach Dave Rose joined the Cougar program as an assistant at a time when the University of Utah was enjoying an unprecedented run of success against the Cougars.

From March of 1995 through February of 2005, the Utes won 20 of 24 meetings, with Rose and then-head coach Steve Cleveland joining the program in the 1997-98 season--in the midst of the malaise.

Since Rose took over as head coach for the 2005-06 season, the tables have turned, so much so that BYU has won 12 of the last 16 rivalry contests, and Rose has yet to lose at home to the Utes--a run of seven consecutive wins dating back to a 72-60 victory in January of 2006.

Posted Dec 5th - 2:49pm by Jason Shepherd

PROVO — The BYU Cougars enter Saturday’s game against Hawaii at EnergySolutions Arena with a record of 6-2 and coming off an impressive victory over Utah State this past Tuesday in Logan.

BYU has played 17 games at ESA dating back to 1993 and is 13-4 in those matchups. For college players, it’s an exciting opportunity to play on an NBA floor in an NBA arena. BYU head coach Dave Rose knows that the atmosphere, especially packed with Cougar fans, is something his player look forward to.

Cougars riding momentum of USU win into December schedule

Posted Dec 3rd - 11:58pm by Sydney Carlson

PROVO — This season’s first broadcast of the weekly “BYU Basketball with Dave Rose” radio show came Wednesday night, on the heels of a thriller in Logan the night before. After a slow start, the Cougars put up 60 points in the second half to defeat Utah State 91-81. Head coach Dave Rose says the victory was a testament to the personality and potential of the year’s team.

“Last night’s game and the feel of that group was as good as we’ve ever had,” Rose said. “I just think everybody was in it for each other to try to win it, and we had some really stellar performances from two or three guys, but a great team win. I like this group. I think this group really has potential to have a great season.”

Tuesday was the first time in almost 15 years that the Cougars were able to win at the Spectrum. Rose said he relied heavily on the veteran leadership of his upperclassmen, who put up 86 of BYU’s 91 points.

Rose, Cougars seek to end lengthy Spectrum spell

Posted Dec 1st - 4:35pm by Greg Wrubell

The last time BYU won a basketball game at Utah State's Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, head coach Dave Rose was still a Cougar assistant coach, while his oldest current player wasn't yet in middle school.

It was almost 15 years ago--Jan. 8, 2000--that BYU last defeated the Aggies on their home hardwoods. Six successive meetings in Logan have ended with USU emerging victorious, most recently in the 2011-12 season.

Since Rose became head coach in 2005-06, the BYU-Utah State series stands 5-3 in BYU's favor, with all three Aggie wins in Logan. Three of the five Cougar victories have taken place at the Marriott Center, with the other two occurring at Salt Lake City's Energy Solutions Arena.

Mendenhall believes defense will determine outcome at Cal

Posted Nov 25th - 11:53pm by Mitch Davis

PROVO — As the Cougars approach their final regular season game versus the University of California, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall knows there is still an opportunity for this year’s team to reach its full potential.

“We still haven’t reached this team’s potential, and one way to do that is to have a great week of practice (and) to play well this week against a very good opponent on the road,” he said.

Mendenhall’s team will undoubtedly need to be sharp on defense this weekend as it faces an offense that ranks fifth in passing yards and 13th in points scored.
