Poll Position
gregWRUBELL
March 8th, 2010 @ 10:39am

It's time for the updated college hoops Top 25 polls; the AP Poll has BYU and New Mexico holding steady at 8th and 14th, respectively. The ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll keeps BYU 15th, while bumping the Lobos to 8th.

BYU victim UTEP drops from 24th to 25th in the AP despite a 2-0 week, while in the ESPN/USAT poll the Miners remains 21st. Utah State nudges up to 28th in the AP and 26th in the ESPN/USAT on the strength of a 15-game win streak.

Of the teams ahead of BYU in last week's AP Poll, Syracuse went 1-1 and dropped from 1st to 3rd; Duke went 1-1 and stayed 4th; Kansas State went 0-2 and dropped only from 5th to 9th. Villanova went 1-1 and went from 9th to 10th; West Virginia leapfrogged UNM after a 2-0 week, moving from 10th to 7th, while Vanderbilt went 1-1 and dropped from 13th to 20th. Wisconsin was 15th last week and moved to 13th after a 2-0 week.

In the ESPN/USAT Poll, similar bumps and drops were observed: Syracuse dropped to 3rd, Duke stayed 4th, K-State was 9th, West Virginia 6th, Villanova 10th, Vanderbilt 23rd. Oddly, Wisconsin dropped a spot to 18th in the Coaches' poll. New Mexico moved from 10th to 8th by jumping Villanova and Kansas State--teams near enough to the Lobos last week.

BYU's ten straight weeks in the AP Top 25 poll is a new school record.

*******

Interesting note about the AP Poll: it has actually been a more accurate indicator than the RPI in predicting seeds for the NCAA Tournament.

From Jerry Palm:

--

"The final AP poll has actually been a better predictor of seeding for teams ranked in the poll. Since 1994, the poll has predicted 339/400 teams (84.8%) within one of their actual seed. The RPI was 299/400 (74.8%).

Since 2005 (when the RPI formula was last adjusted), the RPI predicted 223/325 (69%) teams within one of their actual seeds."

--

So, as of today, the AP Poll would predict a 3-5 seed for BYU.
