The Cougars Receive a "Gift"...
...Bronco says losing at TCU will help humble his team.
October 20th, 2008 @ 10:52am

Okay, so it was like finding a piece of coal in your Christmas stocking, but Bronco Mendenhall this morning called his team's 32-7 loss at TCU "a gift." You can hear all of Bronco's press conference comments by clicking his audio link in the "Cougar Cuts" box to the lower right.

You can also hear Max Hall's weekly podium remarks, as well as interviews with LB David Nixon and OL Travis Bright.

Among other notable notes from Bronco's remarks:

-instead of expanding the offensive playbook, Bronco hinted at scaling back, in particular as it relates to Blue Zone play calls. He said the playbook had already expanded too much without enough attention being paid to execution, and "that will stop."

-he didn't think inserting Austin Collie into the kick or punt return game at TCU was going to be beneficial. He said it might have actually had the opposite effect (relative to chemistry and execution), had he chosen to use him that way.

-he says he never thought of his team as a Top Ten squad.

-he says all of the team's major goals are still within reach (win at home, win a league title, go to and win a bowl game).

-he claimed certain players have been playing "their own way," instead of the "systematic" way. Bronco added that even tailoring certain plays to a particular player is an example of playing outside of the system. He speculated that BYU might further "step back" while learning to play within the system, before progressing.

-he stated that he is concerned about the drop in offensive productivity since scoring 59 points versus UCLA. He added that the UCLA game might have been the "worst thing to happen" to his team, coming as early in the season as it did. He says his team's offensive performance has been either "flat" or "declined" since.

-he reiterated that academic struggles are precluding G Pittman and Mo Foketi from practicing or playing with the team.
