BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy on Monday received the first of what should be multiple college football award nominations, named as one of 75 players on the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the college defensive player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club.

Last season, Van Noy was a preseason watch list nominee for the Bednarik, Bronco Nagurski (most outstanding defensive player) and Rotary Lombardi (lineman/linebacker of the year) Awards, but his most prominent recognitions came for his performance in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Leading BYU to a come-from-behind win over San Diego State, Van Noy was all over field, racking up 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception, forced fumble, fumble recovery, blocked kick, and two touchdowns. He was named to all-bowl teams by USA Today, SI.com, ESPN and CBSSports.com. The scientific/metrics-based College Football Performance Awards group named Van Noy as its 2012 Defensive Performer of the Year.

Van Noy's dominance in San Diego has served as a springboard of sorts for his senior season in 2013, already leading to multiple preseason All-America citations by various publications.

Van Noy is the second Cougar to receive official preseason watch list recognition; most of the awards are sanctioned by the National College Football Awards Association.
