I remember when Mother's Day used to hurt - all of the ads for flowers and chocolate, all of the reminders to wish the mothers in your life a Happy Mother's Day. For me, it hurt because I wasn't a mother.

I remember weeping with the thought that no one will ever call me Mama, that no child will reach for my arms when he falls and skins his knee, that no one will walk up and down the card aisle looking for a Mother's Day card for me.

And then I had two babies in my 40's. And I learned that God does, indeed, have a sense of humor.

May I just say for the women reading this blog who are not mothers, I am with you. I am with you, and I want you to know that all women mother - we create neighborhoods and businesses and friendships and paintings. We bring these creations into the world, often with pain, and then we nurture them. Is this not a mothering process? Don't you know a woman who does not have children but, without whom, your life or your work or your block would be uninspiring? Perhaps she deserves a happy Mother's Day for the mothering, the amazing creation and nurturing, she brings to your life.

Just a thought - for Mother's Day.
