While cellphones are an incredible tool, that a lot of us can't live with out. They can also be an incredible distraction.
This week on Kids' Stuff, I took on the topic of water safety. Doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center are warning parents that they need to more closely supervise their children as we begin the Spring Runoff Season. One of the tips recommended by Dr. Charles Pruitt, is for parents to have a phone nearby when they are out by a pool or a stream so they can call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
One of our listeners sent me an e-mail about that and I think he makes a good point. His point is that parents are often distracted by their cellphones. He said, "I agree with keeping a cell phone around but, I say turn the phone off and watch the children around and in the pool. These same cell phones can keep you busy and if you text all the more!"
Point well taken. If you are going to have your cellphone out by the pool, turn it if off so that you can be aware of what your children are doing. That reinforces the theme of Primary Children's Water Safety Campaign. Don't just be there. Be there and be aware of what your child is doing.
