SALT LAKE CITY -- A crush of people crowded Salt Lake City International Airport on Friday as families seeking a fall break getaway fended with new construction there.

Many students had Thursday and Friday off of school due to the annual Utah Education Association convention. The added vacation time turned into wait time though for patrons who encountered parking lot construction and crowded terminals.

Airport managers had issued a statement warning of the potential for delays. It advised passengers should arrive early. John Hirsbrunner, a Utahn who flies in and out of the state weekly, said the construction is what frustrated him.

“The delays have been for the parking. I haven’t really seen delays with flights or anything in the airport,” Hirsbrunner said.

He said long-term parking is now limited and the extra people only add to the problem.

“The biggest problem I’ve had out here is there seems to be fewer shuttles. So a lot of times I am waiting for a long time for a shuttle and by the time I get on it it’s completely packed.”

In spite of the airport statement, Hirsbrunner said he was never warned him about the added delays.

"I think the first time I knew I saw it here.”

The airport suggested people flying out of Salt Lake City International should arrive at least 90 minutes early for domestic flights or two hours early for an international flight.
