SALT LAKE CITY — A warning from the Utah Department of Transportation: officials say traffic over this Labor Day weekend will probably be heavier than in years past.

Recent reports from AAA say traffic on the country’s roads this Labor Day could be the busiest since the beginning of the recession, and UDOT is planning accordingly.

“We are expecting a lot of traffic out on the roads this weekend, more so than the past few years,” spokesman John Gleason says.

Over the last five years, 13 people have died in crashes over the Labor Day weekend in Utah, so Gleason says buckling-up should be a no-brainer.

“It’s shocking how many people we’re seeing that are still dying as a result of not wearing their seatbelts,” he says.

But where will traffic be the worst?

Gleason says UDOT has put the bulk of its construction projects on hold, but there will be lane restrictions on I-80 that could be especially problematic.

“We reduced I-80 to one lane in each direction just east of Park City between the US 40 junction and Wanship,” he says.

Gleason recommends that people coming from eastern Utah take I-84 to I-15 to get around the delays.

Also, there will be some restrictions on I-15 in Davis County. Gleason recommends Legacy Parkway as an alternate.
