Description:

Commonly known simply as Ficus or Weeping Fig, this slow-growing evergreen tree is a common site in both private and commercial interiorscapes. In its native habitat it can reach heights of 50 feet but is most commonly found indoors from 2-10 feet. Light brown, slightly rough bark is canopied by dense foliage. Multiple tree trunks are often braided for decorative reasons, but trunks are equally appealing when grown singly. Leaves are glossy green or variegated, pointed, oval or elliptic and grow as long as 4 inches. Braches and twigs arch gracefully from the trunk. Stems have a milky sap that can cause skin irritations.

Culture:

Grows best in loose, well-drained soils in bright areas. Tolerate direct sunlight but need protection during afternoon sun. Water should be managed so soil does not become overly wet. Tolerates pruning well and can be pruned to maintain shape and size. Generally, Ficus drop some leaves all the time. If it is relocated to a brighter, darker, warmer, or cooler area, it may completely defoliate and re-leaf within a few weeks. This is normal, albeit a bit strange for a plant to do this. Use a weak fertilizer solution with irrigation during periods of high light and growth.

Use:

Easy to grow houseplant for bright locations.
