OGDEN — Almost 20 years to the day after a brutal assault left a 92-year-old retiree dead, a suspect has been arrested in Alaska.
40-year-old Stephen Ellenwood was arrested at about 2 p.m. in Haines after running from police. The arrest was based on a warrant issued in Utah, according to the Haines Police department.
A Utah cold case file says that a man climbed in through the window of a retirement home and sexually assaulted Mae Odle on May 3, 1993 at about 1:00 a.m. He was interrupted while putting on his pants by an employee who came to check on Odle. He fled wearing only Levis.
Less that two blocks away at about 5:00 a.m. the same night, 57-year-old Elizabeth Bell was beaten and sexually assaulted by a man matching the description of the suspect in Odle's case.
Odle died six days later due to blunt force trauma to the head, chest and extremities, injuries sustained during her assault.
Ellenwood is a suspect in the case, according to the Standard-Examiner.
Details of how the man ended up in Alaska and how investigators found him are still emerging. He is being held in Juneau while awaiting extradition.
