OGDEN -- Police in Ogden brought an end to a tense standoff Tuesday afternoon. After waiting for more than three hours, SWAT teams arrested a 15-year-old boy who had barricaded himself inside a home.

Police were called to the home near 21st Street and Adams Avenue around 1 p.m. when teachers at nearby Dee Elementary School reported shots being fired from a nearby roof. Once officers arrived, the elementary school was put under lockdown.

SWAT teams surrounded the home for several hours until they were able to get a search warrant signed. Once inside, they found the teenager they had been trying to contact.

"All I have is they breached the door," Ogden police Lt. Danielle Croyle said. "He was located and was taken into custody without incident."

Police say the teen lives with his mother in an upstairs apartment at the home. Officers are now questioning him.

The standoff began early Tuesday afternoon when playground monitors at Dee Elementary School reported hearing two or three gunshots.

The teachers told police they saw a man on a roof, firing a handgun into the air. They also saw him go back into the house through a window.

Police say the teen did not appear to be targeting anyone but someone could have easily been hurt.

"It's a challenge for us because you need to balance [the police response] between the protection of the citizens and community," Croyle said.

"It's concerning," neighbor Matt Curran said. "Even if he was just shooting up in the air, there's no call for that."

The school was put under lockdown for a while, but students have since been released from the school and sent home.

People who live in the neighborhood were not evacuated, but police did order them to stay inside and away from windows for a time. Now that the suspect is in custody, the neighborhood lockdown has also been lifted.

Police are still investigating why the teen was firing the handgun. They say he could face possible charges of disorderly conduct and shooting a firearm within city limits.
