DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Stuart Fairchild homered and Wake Forest held on to beat Duke 4-3 on Tuesday in an Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament play-in game.
Fairchild's two-run homer in the first inning helped the 10th-seeded Demon Deacons (33-23) advance into pool play. They will face second-seeded Louisville on Wednesday night.
Seventh-seeded Duke (33-22) had runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth after Peter Zyla's single to right before reliever Will Craig struck out pinch-hitter Michael Smiciklas to end it.
Parker Dunshee (9-4) struck out 10 and allowed three runs in 6 2-3 innings.
Duke scored twice in the seventh on Jack Labosky's RBI double and Justin Bellinger's run-scoring single that made it a one-run game.
Nate Mondou and Gavin Sheets each drove in runs for Wake Forest.
