W. Carolina breaks through with 69-60 road win at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Mike Brown scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Western Carolina earned its first road win of the season, edging VMI 69-60 on Saturday.

The Catamounts fielded just seven players, five reaching double-figure scoring and three earning double-doubles with points and rebounds.

Joining Brown with double-doubles were Torrion Brummit with 15 points and 11 boards, and Justin Browning with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Devin Peterson added 11 points and Haboubacar Mutombo 10.

Western Carolina (9-15, 4-7 Southern) held a 42-30 edge in rebounding and outscored VMI 34-16 in the paint.

Julian Eleby led VMI (6-16, 1-10) with 20 points. QJ Peterson added 14, all in the final 13 minutes of the game when he came off the bench.

The Catamounts made 54-percent of their field goals in the first half, taking a 35-23 lead at the break. Peterson used three 3-pointers and a 3-point play to cut the gap to 49-42.
