BYU baseball sweeps Santa Clara

The BYU baseball team completed a three-game sweep over the Santa Clara team, limiting the Broncos to five runs in the series.

Desmond Paulson earned a complete-game win on Thursday, striking out eight and giving up five hits. Jacob Hannemann belted a two-run homerun in the seventh inning and the Cougars won 3-1.

BYU picked up their second win of the series on Friday, with all but one player registering a base hit in a 8-2 victory.

Adam Miller and Mike Milke combined to limit the Broncos to four hits, striking out six and walking four. The Cougars were led on offense by Jaycob Brugman, who finished the game with two doubles and scored one run.

BYU finished the sweep on Saturday, winning 5-2 behind a strong game from Bret Lopez at the plate and quality pitching from Keaton Cenatiempo and Derek Speigner.

""Things didn't go well for us early in the game, but we kept with it," BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. "To sweep a team like this, I couldn't ask for more from our guys."

The next five games for the Cougars will be at Miller Park in Provo, with two games against Utah and a three-game series against Portland.

Volleyball win streak ends at 12

BYU split their weekend series on the road, defeating No. 7 UC Santa Barbara Friday in five sets but dropping their match against No. 3 UCLA on Saturday.

The win Friday against Santa Barbara clinched the MPSF regular season title, and the Cougars finished the weekend with a 20-4 overall record and a 19-3 conference record.

Freshman Ben Patch led the team with 29 kills in the two games, with senior Taylor Sander with 28 kills.

The Cougars have two remaining regular season games, both in California. They will play against Pacific University on Friday at 7:00 pm PDT, and will play against Stanford University on Saturday at 7:00 pm PDT.

BYU gymnastics finishes fifth at regionals

The BYU gymnastics team finished in fifth place in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the NCAA regional meet. They were led by freshman Makenzie Johnson and junior Raquel Willman, who finished with 38.950 in the all-around.

No. 3 Alabama and No. 9 Utah took the top two spots to advance to the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles on April 19-21 with a 197.400 and 196.400, respectively. Iowa State finished in third with a 195.400 and No. 15 Denver posted a 195.275. No. 23 Kent State finished with 193.500 to round out the scoring.
