NEW YORK (AP) — La Verdad dominated the $200,000 Distaff Handicap, winning by 3½ lengths on Saturday at Aqueduct.
The consistent New York bred 4-year-old earned her first open stakes victory. And she did it impressively as the 2-1 favorite.
Breaking alertly with Jose Ortiz aboard, La Verdad was the clear leader on the run down the backstretch. Bridgehampton ranged up to challenge midway on the turn and was easily rebuffed. From there, it was clear sailing for La Verdad.
She sprinted clear by five lengths at the top of the lane and cruised home to her seventh win in nine starts for trainer Linda Rice.
The time was a quick 1:09.10 for the six furlongs.
La Verdad paid $6, $3.40 and $2.50. Kauai Katie got second, returning $4.20 and $2.60. My Pal Chrisy paid $2.30 to show.
