NEW YORK (AP) — Curtis Granderson was out of the New York Mets' lineup again Thursday night because of an injured right calf.

General manager Sandy Alderson said Granderson had an MRI that showed a mild strain. The right fielder was unavailable off the bench against the Chicago Cubs and is expected to miss at least a couple of games.

"It's already a lingering issue," Alderson said. "The question is whether it's going to go more than a couple of days."

Brandon Nimmo, recently promoted from the minors, played right field and batted leadoff in Granderson's place as the banged-up Mets opened a four-game series against the major league-best Cubs.

Granderson has a .323 on-base percentage with 13 home runs and 22 RBIs. He was a late scratch from the starting lineup Wednesday night in Washington but later delivered a pinch-hit single. He was removed from Tuesday's game with right calf tightness.

"We need to get it quieted down," manager Terry Collins said. "They asked us to back off a little bit."

Alderson said a reinforcement could arrive Friday in Gold Glove outfielder Juan Lagares, nearly ready to come off the 15-day disabled list. Sidelined since June 15 with a sprained left thumb, Lagares was scheduled to play his third rehab game with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday night.

In other news, the Mets added a fresh arm to their bullpen by calling up right-hander Seth Lugo from Triple-A Las Vegas. Left-hander Sean Gilmartin was optioned to the 51s.

Collins said Lugo could provide a long relief outing if necessary. Looking to make his major league debut, Lugo was 3-4 with a 6.55 ERA in 19 games (13 starts) at Las Vegas this season.
