BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have placed backup catcher Caleb Joseph on the 15-day disabled list with a testicular injury.
Joseph was struck by a foul ball in the eighth inning of Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox. He was taken to the hospital after the game and placed on the DL on Monday.
Second on the depth chart behind Matt Wieters, Joseph was batting .182 in 23 games. He broke a 0-for-19 skid Sunday before suffering the injury.
Baltimore recalled catcher Francisco Pena from Triple-A Norfolk to replace Joseph on the 25-man roster. Pena was batting .200 in 24 games with the Tides.
Pena has nine games of major league experience, all with Kansas City. He went 1 for 7 in eight games with the Royals last season.
