CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians catcher Roberto Perez is expected to miss up to three months after undergoing surgery on his right thumb Friday.
The Indians said Perez had the type of fracture where a small chunk of bone attached to a ligament pulls away from the main part of the bone. The surgery sutured the ligament back onto the bone.
Perez was injured while tagging a runner at the plate Saturday against Philadelphia and was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day. He will be sidelined from 8-to-12 weeks.
Perez is hitless in eight at-bats and has drawn six walks in four games.
Cleveland acquired Chris Gimenez from Texas for cash considerations on Wednesday to back up Yan Gomes behind the plate. Gimenez homered in his first game of the season on Thursday.
