CINCINNATI (AP) — The San Francisco Giants called up outfielder Mac Williamson from Triple-A Sacramento before the start of their three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night, a move prompted by Angel Pagan's injury.

Pagan has a mildly strained left hamstring. The Giants are hoping he can recover without having to go on the disabled list, and they called up Williamson to help while he's sidelined.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Pagan had an MRI on Monday that detected a mild strain. He's expected to miss at least four or five games.

The Giants already were short-handed because second baseman Joe Panik has a sore groin. He was out of the lineup for the third straight game on Monday, but could pinch-hit if necessary. Bochy said Panik could return to the lineup as soon as Wednesday.

"He's made a lot of improvement," Bochy said.

Bochy said there was no thought about putting Panik on the disabled list and bringing up a replacement.

"With Joe being so close — available to pinch-hit tonight — we don't have to make that call tonight," Bochy said.

Williamson went 0 for 3 in three games with the Giants this season. He batted .355 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 15 games with Sacramento.

Left-hander Steven Okert was optioned to Sacramento. He made his major league debut this season and gave up four runs in five relief appearances covering 5 2/3 innings.
