CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds put catcher Devin Mesoraco on the 15-day disabled list on Monday after an MRI detected a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
It's the second straight season that he's had a significant injury. Mesoraco missed most of last season with a hip injury that required surgery. He was limited to playing only a few days in a row during his return this season. His non-throwing shoulder bothered him last week, forcing him to sit out a weekend series in Pittsburgh and get an exam when the team returned home.
The Reds have been swamped by injuries.
Shortstop Zack Cozart was out of the lineup Monday night against the San Francisco Giants because his surgically rebuilt right knee was sore. Cozart had surgery last June to repair two torn ligaments and a tendon. Manager Bryan Price said doctors expected him to have soreness in the knee occasionally this year.
"It will be something he'll have to deal with the rest of the year," Price said.
Also, right-handers Homer Bailey and Anthony DeSclafani won't be allowed to throw for at least a few more days because of setbacks during minor league rehabilitation stints last week.
Bailey had Tommy John surgery last May, and the Reds had hoped he could return sometime this month. DeSclafani has been on the disabled list since the start of the season with an oblique injury. Both felt discomfort while pitching last week.
The Reds opened the season with four starters on the disabled list and were hoping to have Bailey and DeSclafani — their top two starters — back early in the season. Raisel Iglesias, who started the season opener, went on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a sore pitching shoulder.
"Unfortunately I've gotten conditioned to this," Price said. "Their health — keeping them healthy — has been really challenging."
The Reds had lost six of their last seven games.
