WASHINGTON (AP) — On his first Memorial Day in office, President Donald Trump is saluting those he calls "real heroes." Trump is honoring the men and women of the U.S. military who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation and their families. Trump participated in the annual observance at Arlington National Cemetery, saying those who died are "special, special people."

PARIS (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited a newly built Russian Orthodox Church near the Seine River in Paris. The Russian government owns the church, the gold-domed centerpiece of a 100 million euros ($112 million) Orthodox Spiritual and Cultural Center that includes a school. Putin was a champion of building a new Russian church in Paris. Human rights groups opposed the project when it first was approved in 2008.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Hundreds of protesters opposing Texas' tough new anti-"sanctuary cities" law launched a raucous demonstration from the public gallery in the Texas House on Monday, briefly halting work and prompting lawmakers on the floor below to scuffle _ and even threaten gun violence _ as tense divides over hardline immigration policies boiled over. Demonstrators in T-shirts reading "Lucha," or "Fight," began cheers that quickly drowned out the lawmakers below, and things only escalated from there.

BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi teen says his life was saved by his 18-year-old cousin who shielded him from bullets. Caleb Edwards says when a gunman entered a home early Sunday, "I thought I was going to die." The 15-year-old talked to The Associated Press on Monday with his mother by his side. He says he was shielded by his cousin, Jordan Blackwell, who was shot to death. Caleb's 11-year-old brother, Austin Edwards, was also killed in the mass shooting.

MARAWI, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine military chief says three Malaysians, an Indonesian and possibly Arab extremists have been killed in a southern city that Islamic militants planned to burn entirely in an audacious plot to project the lethal influence of the Islamic State group. Gen. Eduardo Ano told The Associated Press the military has made advances in containing the siege of Marawi city. He says the leader of the attack has been wounded.
