KANILAI, Gambia (AP) — A Gambian soldier says he and two others were injured when clashing with West African forces at the home of the country's former leader, Yahya Jammeh.

Modou Mbye said Friday that the regional troops entered the property in Kanilai with an armored personnel carrier. Mbye says he and his colleagues were guarding graves Thursday and refused access but the troops entered by force.

Gambia Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Omar B. Bojang says investigations have begun into the incident and that it likely was a misunderstanding.

Tensions remain in the village where Jammeh once said he would return after he lost December elections to President Adama Barrow. Jammeh is now in exile in Equatorial Guinea.

The West African forces are providing security as the new government settles in.
