ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Croatia has received the first group of migrants who came to the country under a European Union scheme to distribute the refugees in the bloc's member states.
Four people arrived to Croatia from Italy on Friday. They were greeted by the Croatian government officials and transferred to a center for asylum seekers.
Croatia has agreed to accept 1,583 migrants by the end of 2017. The migrants will be arriving gradually with several dozen expected in the coming months.
The EU has sought to divide the migrants throughout the bloc after more than 1 million people came in 2015. The plan has faced criticism from some eastern European states.
Hundreds of thousands of migrants have passed through Croatia before the Balkan states closed their borders in March.
