LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) — A church bell rang 47 times in Lac-Megantic to honor the 47 victims of the runaway oil train disaster two years ago that forever changed the small Quebec town.
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said Monday that his government will continue to help the town of 6,000. He added that his thoughts were with those remembering loved ones.
Much of downtown Lac-Megantic was destroyed on July 6, 2013, by a raging fire caused when an unattended train with 72 oil tankers derailed as it rolled downhill toward the town, killing 47 people.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper saluted the resiliency of the town's people and said those found guilty of breaking the law will be held to account.
Several people are facing criminal charges in relation to the disaster.
