JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's military says it used tank fire and an airstrike on targets in Gaza today -- after its troops came under attack by Palestinian snipers as they patrolled on the Israeli side of the border.

The Islamic militant group Hamas that rules Gaza said one of its gunmen was killed. The Israeli military said one of its soldiers had been seriously injured.

Israel and Hamas fought a 50-day war this summer. Gaza militants fired a rocket at Israel on Friday prompting an Israeli airstrike in retaliation the next day for the first time since that war.

An Israeli military spokesman said the military "will not hesitate" to respond to any attempt to harm Israeli soldiers.
