The Obama administration is warning that automatic spending cuts scheduled to take effect March 1 will result in travel delays at major airports and require traffic-disrupting shutdowns of air traffic control towers at smaller facilities.

US troops around the world

The latest Pentagon numbers on troop strength around the world, as of Sept. 30, 2012, indicate that about there are 1.4 million U.S. troops on active duty worldwide, mostly based in the U.S. President Barack Obama also announced Friday the deployment of 100 troops in the African nation Niger, which borders war-torn Mali. There are 20 nations, including North Korea but mostly islands in the Caribbean and South Pacific, where the U.S. has no military presence.
Up to 12,000 US, allied troops for Afghanistan

The U.S. and its NATO allies revealed Friday they may keep as many as 12,000 troops in Afghanistan after the combat mission ends next year, largely American forces tasked with hunting down remnants of al-Qaida and helping Afghan forces with their own security.
