A Qatari court has turned down a request from an American couple charged with starving their adopted daughter to death that they be allowed to leave the Gulf country temporarily to see their other children.

Israelis and Palestinians may be hugely skeptical about the U.S.-led peace negotiations their leaders have been roped into, but the Jordanians seem worried that they actually might succeed. The kingdom is already home to the largest Palestinian population outside the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Jordanian lawmakers and others fear an accord might lead to a new influx of refugees.

UN: UAE judiciary under 'de facto control'

A United Nations human rights expert said Wednesday that the United Arab Emirates' judiciary is under the "de facto control" of the country's executive branch, adding that the government should allow independent investigations into claims of torture if it does not want its image to suffer.

UN says illegal excavations in Syria are `lethal'

Illegal excavations are taking place at important archaeological sites all over Syria that are "extremely dangerous" and "lethal" to the country's cultural heritage, the U.N. cultural agency said Wednesday.
