The Vatican conceded Thursday that most Catholics reject its teachings on sex and contraception as intrusive and irrelevant and officials pledged not to "close our eyes to anything" when it opens a two-year debate on some of the thorniest issues facing the church.

Iraqi Christians flee to Kurdistan region

An insurgent artillery offensive against Christian villages in northern Iraq has sent thousands of people fleeing from their homes, seeking sanctuary in the Kurdish enclave. The shelling of the cluster of villages happened Wednesday in an area 45 miles from the frontier of the self-ruled Kurdish region.

First came the prayers and the congregational singing. Then the worshippers at Woodhaven Baptist Church tensed with excitement. Something special was about to happen. Recorded music boomed through the Spring Branch chapel as four middle-aged women, identically attired in eye-popping outfits, stepped up to the altar to deliver a meticulously choreographed rendition of a lively gospel tune.
