New summer sports guidelines released for high school athletes

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah high school athletes are using the summer to prepare for next season. New guidelines out Thursday are designed to help students stay safe in the heat.

The guidelines were announced by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) at its annual meeting and clinical symposia.

Among the rules:

  • For the first five days of practice, athletes are limited to one practice a day for three hours maximum.
  • An athletic trainer should always be on site.
  • Athletes that use helmets and pads should use only helmet the first two days.

NATA says it released the the guidelines as part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of heat-related athletic injuries in high schools. [CLICK HERE to see the entire list of guidelines]
