WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate Intelligence Committee has an agreement to get former FBI Director James Comey's memos of his conversations with President Donald Trump.
The panel's top Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, confirmed the deal Wednesday and said the panel would have access to the memos "soon." He wouldn't say with whom the committee made the deal.
"We have a commitment to get appropriate access to the Comey memos," Warner told reporters Wednesday. "I'm pleased, I think it's critical information we have to have as part of our review process."
The committee is investigating Russian intervention in the 2016 election, including possible ties to President Donald Trump's campaign. At a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing earlier this month, Comey said he prepared multiple memos documenting conversations with Trump that made him uneasy in the weeks before his May 9 firing.
One memo recounts a February request from Trump, during a private meeting in the Oval Office, that Comey end an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
Details from some memos were made public in news media accounts in the days after he was fired, and Comey himself detailed his conversations with Trump at the Senate hearing.
Warner said he's anxious to see Comey's contemporaneous reflections on his meetings with Trump, particularly the Feb. 14 meeting in which Comey recounts the Oval Office discussion on Flynn.
Warner wouldn't say if he knew if there were multiple copies of the memos.
