TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Toxicology results indicate a New Jersey doctor was not impaired by alcohol or drugs when he smashed head-on into a state trooper's cruiser, killing both men.
Test results provided to The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/2mwCNcP ) by the state attorney general's office Wednesday do not say whether Lloyd Rudley, 61, experienced a medical emergency before the Dec. 5 crash in Millville.
But friends say that's exactly what happened that night along state Route 55. Rudley had diabetes, and the crash was probably caused by an emergency related to that, they said.
The toxicology results are good news to Rudley's longtime neighbors, Steve and Janice Pollock.
"Thank you, Lord, for clearing his name," Janice Pollock said.
She acknowledged they may never know what caused the crash.
Motorists called 911 to report what they perceived was a drunk driver swerving on the thoroughfare. Rudley's car crossed over the median from the southbound lanes and slammed into Frankie Williams' patrol car.
Williams, 31, was responding to reports about Rudley's car.
State police declined to comment.
Rudley worked in a private practice at the now-closed Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital.
More recently, he ran a psychiatry practice in Elmer, New Jersey. Rudley had a home in Elmer and also an apartment in Philadelphia.
