ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — Results of ballistic tests to determine whether a police officer or someone else fired the shot that killed a northern Indiana man aren't expected for at least several days, a state police spokesman said Monday.
Elkhart police said two officers were responding to a burglary report around 3:40 a.m. Sunday when they heard gunshots, ran to the scene and opened fire. Police haven't said what prompted officers to use their weapons.
The Elkhart County coroner on Monday said a gunshot killed 29-year-old Norman Gary and ruled the death a homicide.
"There were several shots fired there by different weapons so it's not easy to determine which gun necessarily fired that shot," State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said. "We don't expect any earth-shattering, ground-breaking news to come out in the next couple of days."
Smith noted the officers involved haven't been interviewed yet, which he said is protocol.
Elkhart police spokesman Sgt. Chris Snyder said police would likely release the names of the officers involved on Tuesday.
