SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man accused of fatally shooting a teenage brother and sister in a fight that started over a shirt has appeared in court for the first time.
Mario Cervantes-Angel is expected to be appointed a public defender after the Friday hearing. The 28-year-old man is facing two counts of aggravated murder, which carries a potential death-penalty sentence.
Prosecutors say a fight broke out July 6 in a suburban Salt Lake City apartment complex after he and three others showed up to confront 15-year-old Abril Izazaga.
Charging documents say her 16-year-old brother Jose Izazaga came out with a knife to defend her after Cervantes-Angel slammed the girl against a brick wall, and Cervantez-Angel responded by shooting both teenagers.
Cervantez-Angel is being held in jail on $2 million bail.
