LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Latest on a police shooting in Los Angeles (all times local):

5:58 a.m.

Los Angeles police say a suspect who shot and wounded an officer during a running gunbattle was himself shot and died at the scene.

Officer Norma Eisenman says the officer was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound and released early Tuesday.

Eisenman says the suspect took off running while officers on patrol were dispersing a group of people hanging out late Monday in the Watts section of the city.

She says during a foot chase, the suspect pulled out a handgun and began firing. The officer returned fire and fatally shot the suspect.

Officials say a gun was recovered at the scene.

Authorities say a Los Angeles police officer was shot and wounded late Monday night in the Watts section of the city.

The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. PDT in the Nickerson Gardens public housing project, and police searched the area for suspects.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the officer was struck in the left arm and was expected to survive.

Deputy Police Chief Bill Scott says the officer was conscious and rushed to a hospital.

Sgt. James Linder told the paper that police apparently "stumbled into a shooting in progress and a gun battle ensued."

The paper initially reported about an arrest, but later said a civilian was also struck by gunfire. Reports that the civilian died couldn't immediately be confirmed.
