NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut police chief has agreed to take a three-week leave of absence following an investigation into reports that he berated a waitress at local restaurant.

New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said in a statement Monday that she found New Haven Chief Dean Esserman's conduct "unbecoming a public official." Harp says Esserman will be paid during the leave.

This is the second time the mayor has reprimanded Esserman for his behavior with New Haven residents.

In 2014, Harp warned Esserman of severe consequences in a written rebuke following a confrontation with an usher at a Yale-Army football game who asked to see his ticket.

Earlier this month, the police union voted 170-42 that it had "no confidence" in Esserman.

Messages seeking comment were left Monday for Esserman and a department spokesman.
