SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The state of Utah has settled a lawsuit filed by people who say they were wrongly arrested for drunken driving by a disgraced former state trooper.
The $200,000 settlement announced Friday comes after a judge refused to dismiss the case against ex-trooper Lisa Steed.
She was a rising star in the department who made hundreds of stops a year before a pattern of questionable practices surfaced.
The Utah Attorney General's Office says the state believes the arrests of the three plaintiffs were legitimate, but the settlement will avoid a drawn-out trial. Their lawyer couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
The settlement will also block any attempt to overturn a judge's refusal to certify the case as a class-action suit, which could have it a multi-million-dollar case.
Steed was fired in 2012.
