DETROIT (AP) — A charter school in Detroit that had more than 800 students is closing after losing support from Ferris State University.
Ferris State trustees voted in May to not renew its contract with Allen Academy, a K-12 school. The Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/28Yv3ot ) says the school has struggled in recent years with low scores on the ACT exam and a loss of students. The number of students is connected to state aid.
The Michigan Association of Public School Academies is inviting families to the school Wednesday to learn about other schools for fall.
A teacher, Kyle Lackey, says the news is "devastating." At its peak, Allen Academy had more than 1,000 students.
At least four other charter schools are closing in Waterford, Detroit and Benton Harbor.
