NEW YORK (AP) — The Latest on the crash of a small World War II-era plane in the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey (all times local):

1:45 a.m.

New York City police say the pilot of a small World War II-era plane that crashed into the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey has been identified as William Gordon.

The New York Police Department released a statement saying the body of the 56-year-old man, of Key West, Florida, was recovered by divers.

Police say the body came from the one-seater P-47 Thunderbolt plane that went down Friday night.

The single-seat plane crashed on a part of the river near where a US Airways commercial jet carrying 155 people splash-landed safely in 2009.

Police are investigating the cause of the Friday night plane crash.

New York City police say divers searching for the pilot of a small World War II-era plane that crashed into the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey have recovered the body of a 56-year-old man.

Police say the body came from the one-seater P-47 Thunderbolt plane that went down Friday night but they are withholding the identity until the man's family has been notified.

The single-seat plane crashed on a part of the river near where a US Airways commercial jet carrying 155 people splash-landed safely in 2009 in what became known as the Miracle on the Hudson.

The plane was taking part in celebrations of its 75th anniversary.

A witness who saw a small World War II-era plane crash into the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey says he thought it was doing a trick.

Siqi Li told the New York Daily News the plane made "kind of a U-turn" and there was a stream of smoke coming from it. He says it was tilting down and he thought it was doing a trick before realizing it was a plane crash.

Police say divers searching for the pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt recovered a body Friday night. They say the body came from the one-seater plane but they haven't confirmed the body is that of the pilot.

Firefighters say the plane had engine trouble before it went down near the George Washington Bridge.
