BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermonters are encouraged to get rid of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The event is happening Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at more than 60 collection sites around the state.
The Health Department says people can quickly and anonymously drop off their unused medications. The sites will be staffed by police and county sheriff departments.
Officials say the safe disposal of drugs is one way to prevent opioid addiction. Commissioner Dr. Harry Chen says pills left in medicine cabinets are susceptible to theft, misuse and abuse — sometimes with tragic consequences.
Nearly 3 tons of prescription drugs were collected in Vermont last year.
