FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Northern Arizona University's two largest fraternities have been disciplined for holding unregistered events where alcohol was served.
The events held by Delta Chi and Sigma Chi took place between September 2015 and January 2016, according to the Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/1UjPdOo).
One of those events was an off-campus party in October where members of Delta Chi and three Sigma Chi pledges got into a largely verbal fight that spilled over onto the university campus.
One of the pledges, Steven Jones, was arrested for allegedly shooting four Delta Chi members, killing one. Jones, who has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault, maintains he acted in self-defense.
Police have found no evidence that the Oct. 9 confrontation was the result of a fraternity rivalry, according to the Republic.
University spokeswoman Cindy Brown said Delta Chi cannot host or attend any events with alcohol until December. Sigma Chi got a warning about violating university rules regarding conduct.
The fraternities also must educate members about holding unregistered events.

Delta Chi has had no discipline violations dating back to the 2011-12 school year. Sigma Chi was disciplined in the 2014-15 school year for housing policy violations and in the 2012-13 school year for holding a large, unregistered party with alcohol in the Coconino County National Forest.
