BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Dozens of schools in the Buffalo area are closed as an arctic combination of lake-effect snow and chilling temperatures grip the region.
School districts across Erie County called off classes Friday as forecasts call for up to a foot of snow to fall by Saturday in some areas, with wind gusts of up to 35 mph making it feel like 20 below.
The National Weather Service has issued lake-effect snow warnings that remain in effect until late Friday night for western New York and into early Saturday for northern New York, while wind chill warnings are in effect for most of the upstate region through the weekend.
Lake-effect storms that started Wednesday and carried over into Thursday dropped 37 inches of snow along Lake Ontario in the Oswego County communities of Mexico and Parish.
