CLOVIS, Calif. (AP) — A San Joaquin Valley school board will revisit its student dress code after concerns that its policy breaks state law protecting gender expression.
The Fresno Bee reports Thursday (http://bit.ly/1O5eXGc) that a Clovis Unified trustee requested the board consider a legally appropriate policy as soon as possible. Ginny Hovsepian made her request Wednesday, saying she did not want students to miss class time or risk suspension because they're out of code.
The current dress code prohibits boys from wearing long hair or earrings. The code states only girls may wear skirts and dresses. In January, the school board narrowly rejected recommendations from administrators to create a single dress code regardless of gender.
Since the vote, Clovis Unified students have protested, with some boys wearing dresses to class to defy gender roles.
