BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho panel has introduced a legislative proposal that would move school board elections from May in odd years to November in even years.
Republican Sen. Jim Rice says the move would garner better voter turnout because the school board elections would coincide general elections and attract more voters to the ballot box.
Rice told a Senate Education Committee Wednesday that a legislative review of 22 districts in the state revealed less than 12 percent of voters voted in 11 districts. Seven of those districts had turnout percentages in the low single digits.
Rice also says the move would make board recall efforts more difficult because a petition to recall a trustee must be signed by 50 percent of the voters who cast votes in the previous election.
