SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A local nonprofit is working to ensure that students in the South Portland area don't go hungry during an upcoming break in classes.
WMTW-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1TcZvzV ) the Locker Project is helping to stock the shelves of food pantries located inside Maine schools so children don't go hungry during vacation next week.
Forty percent of students enrolled in South Portland schools receive either free or reduced-price lunches.
Locker Project executive director Katie Brown says the group is having "great success" getting meals home to the children and families who desperately need it.
Memorial Middle School Principal Megan Welter says the families in need are sometimes food insecure or just needing a little help to bridge the gap.
