DALLAS (AP) — Students at a Dallas middle school have voted to strip their campus of the name of a Confederate general.
The Dallas Morning News (http://bit.ly/1nNgzPw) reports that a majority of the students casting ballots in the nonbinding vote wanted Hood Middle School to be renamed. The school, which opened in 1955, was named for Confederate Gen. John B. Hood.
It's a step in a process that could lead to a name change by Dallas Independent School District trustees, who have the final say.
The school has about 1,000 students, with 84 percent Hispanic, 15 percent African-American and less than 1 percent white.
Principal LaTonya Lockhart says some students asked a teacher about changing the name. Students will also be able to recommend new names that they could vote on later.
