PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Title IX officials at Brown University say students have been reporting cases of sexual assault on campus more frequently since the Providence school adopted a new policy for handling complaints.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1PXIQiu ) the university's new policy eliminated obstacles in reporting the crimes in addition to streamlining the hearing process.
Title IX program officer Amanda Walsh told a special Rhode Island House of Representatives commission studying on-campus sexual assaults that Brown's efforts have enabled more students to come forward.
The university has also recently hired its own private investigators to look into sexual assault reports.
Walsh says many students who were assaulted in the past have come in to talk to the Title IX office now because of the new process.
