CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Teach for America will soon place a handful of teachers in West Virginia schools.
Will Nash, head of Teach for America Appalachia, tells the Charleston Gazette-Mail (http://bit.ly/1XpmavV ) that the organization will start with just five to 15 educators in three southern counties in August. The number is expected to grow to about 30-35 in the next five years.
Nash says the organization is planning to put teachers in McDowell, Mingo and Logan Counties and is not considering a statewide expansion. He says the group won't "solve the larger crisis" in the state but will be one tool that schools can use.
Teach for America recruits and trains recent college graduates and places them in struggling schools across the county for at least two years.
