SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah wildlife officials have approved a new rule for fishing kokanee salmon in an effort to protect the fish species during its spawning period.
KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1VzuW9F ) that according to the Division of Wildlife Resources, anglers will be prohibited from keeping any kokanee salmon caught in Utah from Sept. 10 through Nov. 30. The change takes effect Jan 1.
Cold water sport fisheries coordinator, Paul Birdsey, says the closure allows anglers to keep some fish before the spawn peaks Sept. 10. The peak for the later spawning strain takes place around Nov. 10, so the kokanee will be protected during the earlier and later spawning periods.
Anglers can keep up to the legal limit of kokanee salmon throughout the rest of the year, but some areas will have additional closures.
